What to consider when designing a logo

January 8th, 2007

A well crafted logo reminds visitors visually who your company is and what you are about.

TYPES OF LOGOS

Text Only: You may want a text only logo.  Text is a very simple, easy to reproduce option.  When choosing a text logo consideration should be given to color, font, and angle.  Your logo should match the “feel” of your business.
Graphics and Text: Sometimes combining a graphic or symbol with text helps to convey an image for your company. Not all graphical logos need be so clearly related to a name but might instead infer another concept entirely. Nike uses a “swoosh,”  no one could really tell you what the “swoosh” means, but anyone could tell you that it is Nike.

Design Considerations
Use of Shape and Color: The shape and color of the logo should take into account the business it is being created for. Conservative businesses, such as professional offices, financial institutions, etc.,  might be better off to select more subtle colors and tones. Bright colors are well suited for retail establishments or a business whose market is a more elite.
Keep It Simple: There are many reasons for keeping your logo simple.  Your logo will become a symbol for your company and as such it will be reproduced on virtually everything your company puts out.  You may want to consider something that looks good in black and white as well as in color, as this will aid the ease of reproducing it.  Furthermore, you may want to consider that a detailed logo which looks good upclose, may look messy and blobbish when viewed smaller.

A logo makes your company unique, user friendly, and memorable.  So, remember to make your logo match your audience, keep it simple, and have fun!

Making The Sale

December 30th, 2006

In today’s online marketplace, most would agree that having a superior product is only one piece of the puzzle.  After you have convinced a someone that your product or service is worth investing in, you need to prove that your payment method is of equal quality.  Until recently, small startups have been unable to provide this to prospective customers.  They were limited to selling in markets having established payment methods such as Ebay/Paypal, etc.,  Now, however, the climate for small business sales is changing, being largely facilitated by a service called a Virtual Terminals.  Virtual Terminals are a way to securely transfer funds from one bank account to another.  Companies such as Authorize.net facilitate you securely receiving credit/debit card payments right from your website.  Such assurance, coupled with a quality design, can ensure that your quality service/product’s sales will not be limited by other factors.

Blogs, Blogging, Journaling

December 28th, 2006

Imagine picking up a newspaper and being able to respond directly to the editors and writers of the articles imediately. All other readers then pick up the same newspaper, or maybe they happen to be reading the same article that you are reading, and instantly they can see your comments and they too can respond to your comments. Blogging makes this possible all over the vast internet.

Blogging is a common term used in todays web lingo. If you haven’t noticed, you are participating in a blog right now as you read this little article on blogging.

“A blog is a user generated website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order.

Blogs often provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual although some focus on photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media.

The term “blog” is derived from “Web log.” “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

As of November 2006, blog search engine Technorati was tracking nearly 60 million blogs.” - Wikipedia

Just a hint, if you want to get some more organic traffic to your site, put up a blog , write a daily entry or two or three, and see what happens.

Button Rollovers

December 21st, 2006

Button rollovers are a must when it comes to navigating a professional website. Navigating through websites can be hard when you are unsure of what page you are currently on, button rollovers show visitors to your site, what category they are in, or what page they are currently visitng. It also gives your site a feeling of, “this is a professional website”.

Some examples of button rollovers: (move your mouse over the menus)

http://www.walkfasttalkloudandsmile.com (rollovers non-animated)
http://www.mortgagesaver101.com (Animated rollover buttons)

“Rollover refers to a button as created by a web developer or web designer, found within a web page, used to provide interactivity between the user and the page itself. The term rollover in this regard originates from the visual process of “rolling the mouse cursor over the button” causing the button to react (usually visually, by replacing the button’s source image with another image), and sometimes resulting in a change in the web page itself.

Rollovers can be done by imagery, text or buttons. The user only requires 2 images/buttons (with the possible addition of “alt” text to these images) to perform this interactive action. Rollover imagery can be done either by a program with a built-in tool or script coding. The user will have to pick a first image and select an alternate secondary image. A mouse action will have to be set to either “click on” or “mouse over” in order for the rollover to be triggered. Note that when the “mouse over” moves on the image, the alt image/secondary image will appear but won’t stay - when the user “mouses out” by moving the mouse away from the image, the original source image will reappear.” - Wikipedia
